There is a new portfolio review system in place, starting Spring 2007!!

This year’s graphic design entrance Portfolio Review has been revised. Portfolio Review will be evaluated on 3 separate components.

The first component is quality of portfolio work, this work, is work that is completed in the ARTS 245 and ARTS 246 classes under and with the supervision of an instructor.

The second component is an evaluation of the quality of the overall portfolio, this is work that the students have done to improve their work and the presentation of that work without the help of an instructor. These improvements should be based on the feedback that the student has received from verbal and written critiques during the two 200 level graphic design classes.

The third component will be a diagnostic vocabulary test on terms that have been covered in ARTS 245 and ARTS 246; these terms will include both typography and image making terminology. There will be 100 percentage points on this test. The test will occur within the last 2 days of your typography (ARTS 246) and the results will be available for the students the day of portfolio review. The vocabulary test has no impact on the grade earned in the ARTS 246 class. Minors who are not planning to submit a portfolio for review are not required to take the test.

All of these areas will be evaluated on a 100-point scale. (See diagram below). In order to pass the portfolio review you must receive an average of 83 points (B) or better in all there areas combined. In the event of ties, the reviewers will look back at the student’s combined grade point average earned in both ARTS 245 and ARTS 246. Because the University does not use a minus scale and the graphic design classes do, the grades will be converted back to the original grade percentage and then averaged.

22 students will be accepted into the Graphic Design program in the spring of 2007. There will only be one review and that review will take place on Friday, May 4, 2007.

If you are resubmitting your portfolio from a previous year, please be sure to see Stephanie Nace (777.5880 or snace@sc.edu) in order to sit in on the vocabulary test in one of the ARTS 246 classes.

There will be 3 reviewers, Stephanie Nace, professor; Nikki Villagomez, Adjunct instructor; David Hunt, professional graphic designer.

These changes to the Graphic Design entrance portfolio review are to ensure fairness.

Spring Portfolio Review is Friday, May 4, 2007, 9AM room 323
